What
is NEATO?
NEATO was founded in 1986 as a not-for-profit organization for the preservation,
restoration and celebration of pre-1968 VW Type 2’s. Since then it has
become a large and active nationwide VW Bus club network. We offer a newsletter
(Old Bus Review), a membership mutual aid directory (Transporter Tourist &
Traveler Directory), and a community of fellow enthusiasts throughout the world.
NEATO is the acronym for Northeast Association of Transporter Owners, the official
name of the club. Although NEATO began in the northeastern US, the official
name has been out-of-date for many years. Today, a majority of NEATO members
actually live west of the Mississippi. Members now consider NEATO the Nearly
Everywhere Association of Transporter Owners.
2007 marks NEATO’s 21st anniversary, and we look forward to many more
years of service to the vintage Type 2 owner.
Some of the benefits you have as a NEATO member are:
Old Bus Review
NEATO’s bimonthly Old Bus Review has been called the best newsletter source
of information on the vintage Type 2. In it you'll find letters from members,
tips on restoration, useful technical articles, member adventure stories, and
unusual photos.
Transporter Tourist
& Traveler Directory
Since 1990, NEATO, in cooperation with LiMBO (Late Model Bus Organization) has
produced this annual booklet listing the member names and phone numbers of helpful
Type 2 People around the US, Canada and the world. This booklet offers you the
chance to contact Bus People while you travel: to visit, or even get help in
case of mechanical trouble. The TTT Directory also enables you to get in touch
with fellow members close to home. A web version of the TTT Directory is in
the works.
Local Chapters
There are presently 20 NEATO chapters around the US and Canada at this time
(and more are welcome!). These chapters are active groups of Bus owners and
enthusiasts who organize a variety of small-to-large events throughout the year:
monthly meetings, camp-outs, picnics, caravans and shows. NEATO chapters put
together more events of all kinds than any other VW Club: The OCTO Showpart
of the VW Classic Weekend (California), Vintage VW Weekend (Washington), Bug
Blitz/Bus Blast (Kansas), Great Canadian VW Show (Vancouver, B.C., Canada),
Bulli Brigade (Florida), TransporterFest (Massachusetts), Buses By The Bridge
(Arizona), Bugs & Buses Invade the Village (California), are some of the
larger ones.
NEATO chapter events do more than serve the VW Bus community. They also contribute
thousands of dollars to various charities and non-profit organizations. These
charities and organizations include, but are not limited to: local fire departments,
animal shelters, charities for abused and battered children, food banks, college
scholarship funds, and homeless shelters.
Letters of Valuation
NEATO offers members free letters of valuation in instances of negotiation with
insurance companies in cases of damage or loss of their VW Type 2. Members have
reported that having documentation in the form of an official letter from the
oldest and largest vintage VW Bus club has been very helpful in securing more
favorable results in insurance claims.
Discounts
A number of VW businesses offer discounts or special offers to NEATO members,
and the way to find out about these is through Old Bus Review. These include
discounts on all manner of parts and services to help keep your Old Bus alive.
NEATO also offers unique items and discounts to club members through its NEATO
Stuff catalog.
A Community of Fellow
Enthusiasts
When you become a member of NEATO, you join an enthusiastic group of Type 2
owners and admirers--people who have the parts, know-how, and willingness to
help fellow Bus people. Whether you live in a place where there are many other
Bus owners or if you only see another split-window Bus once or twice a year,
NEATO gives you connection to the larger world of vintage Type 2 enthusiasts.
